Mechanical and electrostatic properties of carbon nanotubes and nanowires

چکیده
Nano-scale manipulation and property measurements of individual nanowire-like structure is challenged by the small size of the structure. Scanning probe microscopy has been the dominant tool for property characterizations of nanomaterials. We have developed an alternative novel approach that allows a direct measurement of the mechanical and electrical properties of individual nanowire-like Ž . structures by in situ transmission electron microscopy TEM . The technique is unique in a way that it can directly correlate the atomic-scale microstructure of the nanowire with its physical properties. This paper reviews our current progress in applying the technique in investigating the mechanical and electron field emission properties of carbon nanotubes and nanowires. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Ab Initio Study of Chirality Effects Onphonon Spectra, Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Nearly Samediameter Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes
In this paper, we have used density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and Pseudo-potential method to calculate the phonon spectrum, phonon density of states (DOS), specific heat capacity and mechanical properties of (5,5) armchair and (9,0) zigzag Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs). Our calculations show that Young’s modulusfor (5,5) and (9,0) nanotubesare higher than 1TPa. We have also ...
متن کاملEffective Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposites Reinforced With Carbon Nanotubes Bundle
Nanocomposites made of Carbon Nanotube (CNT) bundles have attracted researchers’ attention due to their unusual properties such as: light weight, flexibility and stiffness. In this paper, the effects of straight and rope-shaped bundles on nanocomposite effective mechanical properties are investigated. First, FEA models are created consisting of CNTs with different shapes of straight and rope-...
متن کاملEffects of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on The Mechanical Properties of Glass/Polyester Composites
Excellent mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them outstanding candidate reinforcements to enhance mechanical properties of conventional composites. The glass/polyester composites are widely used in many industries and applications. Improving the mechanical properties of such composites with addition of CNTs can increase their applications. In this research, multi-walled carbo...

In the early 1990s, Iijima (1991) discovered a onedimensional (1D) nanostructure, the carbon nanotube (CNT), which sparked an entirely new avenue within nanoscience and nanotechnology. Nanowires (NWs) (Cui and Lieber 2001), nanorods (Li and Alivisatos 2003), nanotubes (Wang and Li 2003), and nanobelts (Pan et al. 2001) of various materials have been successfully synthesized shortly afterwards. ...
متن کاملExperimental Study on Amine-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes’ Effect on the Thermomechanical Properties of CNT/Epoxy Nano-composites
This paper investigated the effect of the amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the thermomechanical properties of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites. Mechanical stirring and ultra-sonication were utilized to uniformly disperse CNTs into the epoxy matrix. Non-functionalized and amine-functionalized CNTs with different weight percentages (wt. %) were mixed into the epoxy resin. Using standard te...
